5 Key Areas Where Doulas Make a Real Difference
The word “doula” gets thrown around a lot these days, and it’s easy to assume we just rub backs and say encouraging things while people labor. While we do love a good hip squeeze and an “I believe in you” moment, doula work runs much deeper than that.
If you’re wondering what doulas really do — here’s the breakdown. These are the five core areas where I show up for every single client, no matter their birth plan, provider, or setting.
1. Emotional Support
Birth is big. It’s vulnerable, raw, and unpredictable — and your emotional landscape during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum matters. As a doula, I’m tuned into what you’re feeling, not just what’s happening clinically. I’m there to reassure you, talk you through fears, hold space when things get intense, and remind you that you’re not alone. You can cry, question, celebrate, vent — and I’ll still be right there.
2. Physical Support
Yes, this includes the hands-on stuff — counterpressure, massage, positioning, movement, hydration reminders, warm packs, and all the physical tricks that bring comfort, relief, and progress. But it also means watching your body language, knowing when to switch positions, and helping your partner support you effectively. It’s about reading the room and the body.
3. Informational Support
I’m not here to replace your provider — I’m here to help you understand what your provider is saying. Whether we’re discussing induction methods, cesarean prep, or breastfeeding in the first hour, I’m your built-in translator, question brainstormer, and research nerd. If you’re faced with a decision, I help you explore your options using evidence-based information and simple tools like the BRAIN acronym — so you can choose what’s right for you.
4. Advocacy Support
Advocacy doesn’t mean storming into the hospital with a picket sign. It means helping you feel confident using your voice. I make sure your preferences are understood, your questions are heard, and your autonomy is respected. If something feels off or unclear, I’ll help you slow things down and regroup. I can’t speak for you — but I’ll always speak with you.
5. Partner & Family Support
A doula isn’t here to replace your partner — we’re here to support the whole team. I help partners know how to help, remind them to rest and eat, guide them through hands-on support techniques, and take the pressure off so they can be emotionally present. I also help parents, siblings, or support people navigate their roles without adding stress to yours.
Every birth is different. Every client is different. But these five areas?
They’re the core of doula work — and they show up in every birth I attend, whether it’s a homebirth in a quiet bedroom or a hospital birth with monitors and wires and a whole team in the room.
So if you’ve ever wondered what doulas actually do… the answer is: a little bit of everything — and a whole lot of exactly what you need.
