Insurance questions come up all the time, and honestly, I get it — nothing derails the excitement of preparing for birth faster than trying to decode benefits pages written in fluent Bureaucrat. So let’s simplify this. I’m Phyllis, the doula behind Dogwood Doula Birth Services, and I’m here to break down what’s covered, what’s not, and how to get your benefits approved without the headache.

Spoiler: If you’re in Fayetteville or Fort Liberty, there’s a very good chance your plan does help cover doula support. And that means more education, more hands-on help, more confidence in labor — without stretching your budget.

Medicaid Plans We Accept

If you’re covered by Healthy Blue, United Healthcare, or WellCare NC, you’re off to a great start. These plans typically offer doula coverage, sometimes partial and often full. I’ve created simple walk-through guides for each plan so you can see exactly how to activate your benefits and get approved quickly. All medicaid plans include Prenatal Visits, Labor Day Birth Support and Postpartum visits. Some plans include Telehealth as an option.

TRICARE for Military Families

TRICARE families, you’re not forgotten — I’m officially a Network Participating Provider. Whether you’re on Prime or Select, doula services are covered! At this time this does not include MTFs (Womack here locally) And because I’ve navigated military paperwork more times than I care to admit, I’ll walk you through each step. The best part? This coverage is not a reimbursement. Tricare Credentialed Doulas bill directly to Tricare, and there is NEVER a Co-Pay. The only time you miiiight pay out of pocket is if you choose a telehealth appointment, a fabulous Tshirt or a community class, which are all considered “non-covered services”.

Private Insurance (Coming Soon)

We’re working hard to add major private insurance providers to our accepted plans. Some plans already reimburse for doula support, even if it’s not widely advertised. If you think your insurance may cover doula care, reach out — I’m happy to help you sort through your benefits and figure out what’s possible. If possible I’ll check out the credentialing process to see if I can get contracted in time.

Additional Plans & Reimbursement Options

Some insurers offer partial reimbursement for doula services even if we’re not directly credentialed. If you’re unsure whether your plan includes doula benefits, please reach out. I’ll gladly help you review your coverage and explore options. And if I can’t accept your insurance directly, I’ll do my best to refer you to a doula who is covered — or we can set up convenient payment plans so you can still access the services you prefer.

Out-of-Pocket Options

If insurance isn’t an option right now, I offer flexible payment plans through Affirm and Klarna. You deserve support that fits your needs and your budget.

Why Choose Dogwood Doula?

My approach is grounded in evidence-based education, hands-on comfort techniques, and a whole lot of clarity. Whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, getting an epidural, or preparing for a planned C-section, you deserve support that meets you where you are.

Having a doula has been shown to improve outcomes, reduce interventions, and help families walk away feeling confident and respected. That’s the heartbeat of what I do.
